UDA’s candidate, Urbanus Ngengele speaks after defeat

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party candidate Urbanus Ngengele has conceded defeat after Wiper party candidate Kavindu Muthama won the Machakos County Senatorial by-election.

Ngengele, a close confidant of Deputy President William Ruto on Friday, March 19, 2021 accepted the defeat after he lost to Wiper party candidate Kavindu Muthama.

Ngengele was speaking during an interview where he stated that he was shocked with the outcome of the Machakos County Senatorial result.

“I was very shocked by the outcome of the results but asiyekubali kushindwa si mshindani,” Ngengele stated.

He noted that the voter turnout in the area was very low and appealed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to consider holding the by-elections over the weekend.

The UDA party candidate thanked Deputy President William Ruto and former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama for their support.

Kavindu also noted that there was low voter turnout during the Machakos by-election and suggested that the IEBC should be choosing public holidays for by-elections.

“I am leading in all eight constituencies and I am thankful for that,” Kavindu stated.

Wiper party candidate Kavindu Muthama won the Machakos by-election with a total of 104,080 votes, UDA’s Urbanus Ngengele came in second with 19,735 votes. The other candidates performed as follows; Mutua Katuku of Maendeleo Chap Chap (1,476), Francis Munyambu (1,461), Simeon Kitheka (1,448), Lily Mwanzia (927), John Musingi (687), Nthenge Otto (159), Jonathan Maweu (155), Sebastian Nthama (131), and Stanley Muindi (95).

However, Katuku withdrew from the race on Monday, March 15, 2021 in favor of the Wiper candidate.
