Health officials have moved in swiftly, after what is suspected to be Coronavirus struck leaving three members of one family dead, in a span of less than one week.

The family in Masaani village in Kwa Vonza location of Kitui County has been thrown into grief following the mysterious deaths of the three of its members in quick successions.

The death of a man, his elder sister, and their blood mother in less than a week have left the family in mourning and pushed the health authorities into alarm mode.

It all began with the death of Tom Kilonzo Ileve, a 51-year-old Kenya Revenue Authority officer attached to the customs department in Mombasa County.

Confirming the incident, area chief Ronald Mbuvi said Tom had traveled home on October 16th, 2020, and fell sick soon after arrival, was then rushed to Neema Hospital in Kitui, where he succumbed hours later.

“He had complained of chest pains when approaching home. The family took him to the hospital the same evening but he never made it,” the administrator said, adding that Mr. Ileve was buried on Saturday.

His elder Sister Domitila Munyoki was then taken ill on Sunday and was rushed to the hospital where he died the following day.

The family members added that Domitila was diabetic at the time of her death.

As if that is not enough, the worst was to follow, as the 90-year-old family matriarch Anne Nzisiva Ileve complained of headache, fever, and difficulty in breathing.

She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

County health officials led by chief officer Richard Muthoka have launched investigations into the possible cause of the deaths.

“The two bodies will be examined to rule out the doubts and fears surrounding the deaths. The three had interacted with one another,” Dr. Muthoka said.

“The first death was of an individual who had traveled from Mombasa, one of the Covid-19 hotspots.”

Dr. Muthoka added that contact tracing had also begun, with samples already taken from more than 20 members of the family and relatives to determine if the deaths could be Coronavirus related.

“We ask those who were in contact with the family to come testing,” Dr. Muthoka said.
