Tension in Tanzania as opposition leader Tundu Lissu rejects election results

Tension is high in Tanzania after the opposition party Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) rejected the results of the presidential election.

In a press conference today, Opposition leader Tundu Lissu who is the Chadema candidate maintained that the process was marred with irregularities and termed it a fraud.

He urged the international community and envoys to reject the results of the polls.

Preliminary results show president John Pombe Magufuli on track to defending his seat after voters took to the ballot yesterday, 28 October 2020.

The campaigns were made with claims of harassment and intimidation of opposition party.

Several opposition party at various levels had their campaigns suspended/banned from campaigns by relevant authorities in the run up to the elections.

The international community earlier long expressed concern on the manner in which opposition leaders who have been treated.

Tanzanian authorities were yet to respond to Lissu’s announcement by the time of going to press.
