Tension and divisions have rocked DP Ruto’s Tanga Tanga team ahead of the Machakos by-elections as members of the brigade differ over who is to be the flagbearer in the upcoming senatorial mini polls.
Reports indicate that former Machakos Senator and DP’s strong point man from the region is backing former Machakos County Deputy Governor Benard Kiala to wear Boniface Kabaka’s shoes.
A parallel force from leaders of the same faction is also said to be lobbying for former Agriculture assistant Minister Peter Kaindi to take over the leadership.
The former Senator has always played an integral part in the DP’s camp, owing to his role in the Msambweni by-elections late last year, and is having a keen eye on who is to replace Kabaka as the next Senator.
This comes as the Muthama chaired newly formed United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is said to have attracted a record number of 10 aspirants all eyeing the ticket in the race.
Among those lining for the ticket includes; Nairobi based Businessman Gilbert Maluki, politician Patrick Mathuki, former Matungulu West MCA Magdaline Ndewa, Kiala, University of Nairobi lecturer John Musingi, insurance underwriter Urbanus Ngengele, Kaindi, Titus Ndambuki, and Winfred Mutua.
Among those rallying behind Kaindi are, Members of Parliament Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East), and Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town) who on January 4, 2021, accompanied the former legislator to the DP’s Karen offices.
Munyaka described the former Kathiani lawmaker as the best candidate for the position, able to deliver a win to the DP’s camp on the election date.
“I will campaign for him in Machakos Town and he will definitely deliver a win for us,” Munyaka stated.
Reports further indicate that the Tanga Tanga team is planning to host a delegation of candidates in Karen to settle on the best for the race.
This comes as the Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap had a fortnight ago already settled on the former Mwala MP John Mutua Katuku as the party’s flag bearer
