Suspected Al Shabaab militants attack 2 buses in Mandera County

Suspected Al Shabaab militants on Monday, June 7, 2021 attacked two buses in Mandera County.  

The Mandera incident which took place between Ola and Sarman was confirmed by Banisa police boss Khamasi Shivogo who revealed that several police officers were injured during confrontation with the armed gunmen.

Witnesses who were present at the scene of the accident narrated that one of the drivers tried to speed off from the scene in a bid to escape the terrorists however, the bus overturned injuring 10 passengers. 

The insecurity within Mandera County has been a growing concern among residents of the county after three police officers who were on routine patrol were attacked and killed after been ambushed by suspected Al Shabaab terrorists. 

During the incidence, Senior Assistant General of police Miriam Muli confirmed that five other officers had also been seriously injured following the incident.

“The ambush which took place at 6 a.m in Banisa during routine border patrol, has unfortunately left five of our police officers injured and they are currently receiving medical attention,” Muli stated.

The police boss assured residents that police officers had increased surveillance within the area in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Several Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officers were also injured in another incident after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Kenya-Somalia border. 

 KDF Spokesperson Zipporah Kioko confirmed the incident stating that three soldiers succumbed to their injuries as a result. 

“Regrettably, three soldiers succumbed to their injuries. These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya,” Kioko stated.
