Speaker Muturi rejects some BBI vote reports

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi on Thursday February 25, 2021 announced the status of reports on how the Members County Assembly (MCAs) voted for the constitutional amendment bill.

Speaker Muturi revealed that three County Assemblies did not meet the requirements for submission of the draft bill.

According to the National Assembly Speaker, the Counties which have not met the requirements for submission of the BBI draft bill include; Baringo County which presented the certificate of rejection but did not provide the copy of the draft bill.

Kwale and Nyamira Counties also failed to meet the requirements after they presenting a bill which had clauses variant to the bill submitted by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) to the County Assembly.

Muturi stated that at least 30 County Assemblies have successfully submitted reports of how they voted on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill to the Parliament.

The Speaker also noted that a total of 14 Counties are yet to deliver the BBI draft bill with their certificate of approval.

“At this moment it is difficult to determine whether Nyamira county assembly received the correct bill and amended it,” the speaker said.

This comes after 42 County Assemblies had voted for the BBI Bill thereby surpassing the 24 mark required by law hence now pushing it to the National Assembly and the Senate.
