Sonko-Wanjiru alliance formation matrix ahead of Nairobi Gubernatorial by-election

The Nairobi gubernatorial seat that fell vacant following the impeachment of Mike Sonko has turned into a fierce battleground, pitting the pro-handshake team against the Tanga Tanga outfit.

Former Starehe Member of Parliament, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko are said to be forming an alliance ahead of Nairobi by-elections that is scheduled for Thursday, February 18, 2021.

Wanjiru had stated that she would vie for Nairobi Gubernatorial seat with the Hustler Nation Team, a slogan that is associated with Deputy President William Ruto.

“I work with Ruto, so I will vie with the Hustler Nation team. We work with what wananchi say. The people have decided it’s me and it is up to them to decide the ticket I will use,” Wanjiru said.

Sonko who is also a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto had already indicated that he is ready to back another candidate if he is not cleared to vie.

“I have accepted the impeachment, but the people have not impeached me. Even if I don’t vie, we will know who will be governor of Nairobi,” Sonko said.

However, sources have revealed that Sonko is planning to rally his support for the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat behind a candidate that will be fronted by Deputy President William Ruto in a move to counter Uhuru and Raila.

This was revealed through his videos and tweets that he had posted on his social media page stating that they are strong and ready for the Nairobi Gubernatorial by-elections.

“We are strong and we are ready for the by-election,” Sonko stated in videos posted on his social media pages.

In a move to start up his campaign and to strengthen his political base, Sonko was in Starehe Constituency where he initiated a food drive to help families during the Christmas festivity on Sunday, December 20, 2020.

He also stated that he will tour all the Constituencies within Nairobi County in the coming days.

Sonko and Wanjiru are veteran Nairobi politicians and are seen as popular, especially in informal settlements which best places them at the top of other contenders.

With the support of Deputy President William Ruto and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Bishop Margaret Wanjiru could complicate the race for the handshake principals.
