Nairobi County government is facing a looming crisis in service delivery as the war between governor Mike Sonko and the recently formed Nairobi Metropolitan services body intensifies to roping in President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The looming paralysis features Governor Sonko who has taken his war to President Kenyatta’s doorstep vowing to frustrate funds to the General Mohamed Badi led body.
Citing the gone dark days, Sonko promised to brave the intimidation, blackmail, and “orders from above” to release cash to the body backed by the head of state which he referred to as an “amorphous” body.
“The dark days are over. We will not allow anybody to breach the law. Personally going forward, I will not allow any intimidation from anyone,” Sonko said.
The County chief continued that the NMS is an illegal and unconstitutional body, that has made him the subject of impeachment since its inception whenever he differs with the orders from above.
This comes just a fortnight after Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani had failed to release funds for the NMS for lack of proper legal framework.
Recently the Sonko administration was accused of not releasing the 253Million shillings donated by the national government for supporting levels 2and 3 hospitals after appearing before the Senate Health Committee over wrangles with NMS.
The governor in rebuttal accused the NMS and treasury of collaborating in denying them access to the funds thereby paralyzing functions of the County government.
“They have blocked us and denied my officers IFMIS codes that would have enabled us to access the money,” he told the committee chaired by Trans Nzoia Senator Michael Mbito.
“This reality has not only paralyzed the health sector but the operations of all other sectors of the county government,” he added.
