Senator Mwaruma to replace Malala as Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate

The ODM Party is on an aggressive search of a suitable replacement of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who hold the position of Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate. This comes after Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo flatly rejected Raila Odinga’s offer to replace Malala, with whom they are members of Team Kenya in the Senate.

According to sources,ODM is determined to have Malala’s replacement come from the Coast region and Taita Taveta Senator Jones Mwashushe Mwaruma is likely to be the one. This is after it was not possible to have a replacement from Western region. Senators Wako and Wetangula were not interested in the position while Khaniri already holds a position in the Senate.

On Tuesday, Mwarumba accompanied ODM leader Raila Odinga to State House at a meeting chaired by President Uhuru over the divisive revenue bill debate. Also present at the meeting were leaders of Majority and Minority in the Senate, as well as the two whips.

President Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga believe Senator Malala is becoming an impediment to government agenda, by the virtue of his position as Deputy Majority leader in the Senate as well as his stance on the Revenue Allocation Bill.

This is explained given the unique working relationship between Jubilee and ODM Parties. Malala is a member of the ANC Party but he got his position in the Senate after ODM’s lobbying.
