Senator Irungu Kangata summoned to State House over controversial BBI letter

Majority Leader in the Senate Irungu Kangata has been summoned to State House by President Uhuru Kenyatta, over his BBI letter. The summon comes at a time when there are claims from some quarters that Senator Kangata’s letter is an inside job by President Uhuru’s men as they lay ground to raid Mt Kenya, accompanied by the Head of State and Raila Odinga.

Even though President Uhuru Kenyatta has been under pressure from some Jubilee leaders to replace Senator Kangata with another person, the Head of State is not keen on making any changes in Jubilee leadership in both Houses as this will amount to opening unnecessary warfronts ahead of 2022.

According to sources, the letter by Senator Kangata may be a strategy by President Uhuru’s men, was meant to put DP Ruto on the opposing side of the BBI, before President Uhuru Kenyatta kicks off his maiden tour, with DP Ruto completely on the opposite side.

“Could this be a master political game initiated by Kenyatta to give him a good reason to rejig a few things? Well, it is a technique I have seen used effectively. Time will tell,” Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua told the press on Tuesday.

Despite being leaked to the press, Kangata has maintained that the issues raised in the letter are substantive and he hopes they will be handled by the President.

“Kindly though the letter dated 30th December is authentic, I didn’t give it to the media. Someone else who had been copied did. I apologise for that. With the benefit of hindsight. I should have copied no one else. Trust substantive issues raised in the letter will be remedied,” said the Senate Majority Whip on Monday.
