Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who has since been arrested by the DCI for incitement, was targeting President Uhuru Kenyatta with his remarks. The senator, in a thinly veiled threat warned those opposing DP William Ruto as well as those planning to betray him. It is on record leaders from the Rift Valley feeling President Uhuru Kenyatta has abandoned Ruto and is betraying him by working with Raila Odinga.
The remarks by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei that they are profiling people deemed to be against DP William Ruto should not be taken lightly. The Rift Valley has seen a bore the brunt of political violence after every election, where ‘outsiders’ mainly Kikuyu settlers are evicted from their lands, by the native Kalenjins.
Even though every citizen can decide where to live in any corner of the republic, this is a choice that has put many ‘foreigners’ in the Rift Valley trouble. After the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, Rift Valley residents including elected leaders from the region, feel the DP is being sidelined by the president. Matters are being made worse by Raila Odinga’s closeness with the head of state as well as the died bromance between Uhuru and Ruto.
This is a contrast to the 2012-2017 period where the two leaders would be seen playful in public even a times donning matching outfits. The feeling in the entire Rift Valley region is, Uhuru has betrayed Ruto. This is according to the sentiments of Uasin Gishu Women Representative Gladys Shollei. This is fueled by the fact that Uhuru has not publicly declared he will support the DP as he had earlier planned.
“And when you talk about this is it meant to stop Ruto from the presidency? Yes, that is the feeling out there… That is the voice of the people from Uasin Gishu and most of Rift Valley. They also feel betrayed because the president said publicly that he would support Ruto when his term ends, “she said during an interview at K24 on Sunday night.
It is this feeling of betrayal on Ruto that is slowly instilling fear in Kikuyus living in the Rift Valley. They believe if things go south, and DP Ruto does not become President, then they will be targets of attack and ethnic profiling.
