In a brazen statement that exuded just how much confidence some of the Deputy President’s supporters have in the average Mount Kenya region voter, a Rift Valley ally of Dr. William Ruto has now come out to claim that there’s been a paradigm shift in the politics of Central Kenya, and this time the ordinary mwananchi has made a conscious decision to vote for William Ruto, whether or not their local leaders back the decision or not.
This was said by self-confessed Hustler Movement Wala Nyasi leader and Deputy President supporter, pastor Gerald Bitok. He was speaking on Radio Jambo’s weekly popular political show Mazungumzo Wazi Wazi which was hosted by Bramwell Mwololo. Others on the panel were Amani National Congress party official Brian Mulama, and former Jubilee party nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura.
While responding to a question by the show’s host about whether there is possibly anyone that might be strong enough to threaten DP Ruto’s support in Central Kenya, Bitok declared that there’s absolutely no one who could do so.
He added that ever since the DP made his presidential intentions clear, there emerged sustained efforts by Mount Kenya’s hierarchy to try and frustrate him but he has been able to weather the onslaught. He said that this was because the ordinary Central Kenya voter had decided, for the first time, to support a leader of their choice, regardless of whether their local leaders agreed or not.
He added that because of this newfound self-belief, it mattered little whether or not all the members of parliament and leaders from the area who have been accompanying DP Ruto on his frequent trips to the region continue to do so or not. Either way, the region’s vote will still go to Ruto.
Isaac Mwaura, however, objected, saying that historically, people from Mount Kenya have never followed the voice of a single leader, but rather, a collegiate system of leadership which comprises of the warriors (Njamba), local leaders (Mutongoria), and the rich people of the community. He maintained that this continues to be the case.
