President was so mad on Tuesday morning after learning Deputy President William Ruto met senior IEBC officials, including Wafula Chebukati at his Karen home on Monday evening, after the launch of BBI Report at the Bomas of Kenya. The president reportedly called his Deputy “ngoma ya mundu uria eciragia dimwana wake” loosely translated to mean a ”devious person who thinks am his child”.
It is believed the DP has incited them against the BBI that it is fashioned to disband the entire IEBC. Ruto on Monday instructed the Commission to issue a statement rejecting BBI and chiding Raila Odinga. He has also requested them to publish a detailed rebuttal on BBI in one of the local dailies.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is keen on having the entire IEBC overhauled and a new team put in place within six months. On Wednesday, the Head of State signed into law the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Bill No. 3 of 2019.
The amended IEBC law establishes a selection panel to oversee the filling up of vacant positions at the Commission as well as future appointments to the electoral agency. The new law also sets the criteria for the selection of IEBC Commissioners and outlines the qualifications of members of the selection panel.
The proposed amendments BBI seek to enhance the transparency and fairness of representation in the electoral system as well as reform the management structure of the body.
