Ruto speaks on Waiguru’s slogan “You can rent but not Buy a Kikuyu”

Deputy President William Ruto has dismissed a section of Mount Kenya politicians using a slogan that you can rent but not buy a Kikuyu during his meeting with a group of leaders from Mount Kenya region.

While addressing a delegation of leaders from Kirinyaga at his home in Karen, Nairobi County, Ruto stated that the slogan is retrogressive adding that Kenyans are wise enough to make correct political decisions.

The second in command also claimed that the slogan is used by a group of politicians who have lost the support of the people at the grassroots level and are crafting ways to divide Kenyans along tribal lines.

“If you don’t have a development agenda to take Kenya to the next level, don’t say there are people who can be bought or rented. There is no Kenyan who can be bought or rented.

“We all know what we are doing and Kenyans are intelligent enough to make informed decisions. They don’t have to be bought, they know what they are doing,” Ruto said.

Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru who is one of the proponents of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) from the Mt Kenya region was once quoted while using the slogan to justify why Mount Kenya region counties would pass the BBI.

“You can rent a Kikuyu but you cannot buy a Kikuyu,” Waiguru stated.

Law makers who attended the meeting led by Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua pledged their support for Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

“Your Excellency the Deputy President, you are a leader who has been tested and has shown results. We will support you,” Gachagua stated.

Other members of parliament present include; Alice Wahome (Kandara), John Kiarie ( Dagoretti South), George Kariuki (Ndiya) and Purity Ngirici (Kirinyaga Woman Rep).
