interior CS Fred Matiangi has refuted claims of downscaling of Deputy President Willam Ruto’s security.
Appearing before the National Assembly’s security committee on Wednesday, Matiangi said Ruto is the most guarded holder of the office of the Vice President since Independence.
In an elaborate breakdown of the DP’s Security formation, Matiangi said the Deputy President has a total of 257 police officers offering security on daily basis.
“Contrary to the allegations made and in view of the tables evidence (annex land 2), H.E. the Deputy President is the most guarded in the history of the country in comparison with previous equivalent office holder,” said Matiangi.
The Interior CS explained the DP’S security is multi-layered with the inner layer having 121 officers from the elite Presidential Escort team which has remained intact. They include officers from the Administration Police and Prison department who provide a 24-hour mobile patrol within the DP’S residence.
On the first layer is a total of 85 officers among them 74 from the elite Presidential Escort Unit, 5 General Service Unit officers and 6 DCI officers.
” The second layer of DP security was rearranged and there was no removal. It is a mandated of the IG to do the rearrangement. Consultations were done before the move was taken. It was legal, strategic and openly diney,” Said Matiangi.
The CS said the DP enjoys the service of a further 51 officers who are Manning a number of Ruto’s private properties including Weston Hotel.
