New details have emerged on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s promise to Senators before impeaching the Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki from the Senate Deputy Speaker position.
It has been reported that the Head of State on Friday 22 May held a brief meeting with 51 Senators allied to him and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga at State House Nairobi before Kindiki’s ouster.
A detailed report by the Daily Nation on Saturday 23 May, revealed that Senators allied to the handshake partners were picked with busses at Parliament, at around 10 A.M before the senate sitting.
The Country’s Commander in Chief is said to have promised the Senators to revive the Senators’ oversight kitty that was reduced last year in June.
The Head of State also urged the Senators to prepare for two crucial tasks going forward without disclosing what the assignments were, but a close source hinted that one was political and the other aligned to his legacy.
The source close to the President further hinted that the former Prime Minister’s team was informed to settle on a Deputy Speaker.
In a brief meeting at State House, President Kenyatta is reported to have urged the Senators to oust Kindiki, as the move would clear the way for a constitutional agenda.
“The message was short and clear. They told us the coming days are crucial in constitutional reforms and we must clean the house by removing all those who don’t conform to their agenda,” one Senator who wants identity kept secret for security reasons disclosed.
Reports further indicated that Head of State granted Odinga’s team a chance to chose the Deputy Speaker, with several nominees already settled on.
Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina had contested for the Senate Deputy Speaker’s seat but lost as ODM fell short of numbers before Kindiki was elevated to Deputy Speaker after the 2017 elections.
Raila’s ODM party has reportedly been offered back the chance and the party is poised to choose between Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Nominated Senator Judith Pareno, and Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior who is currently the Minority whip.
