Following Mombasa governor Hassan Joho’s public appeal for the party’s support in his Presidential bid ahead of the 2022 general elections, ODM leader Raila Odinga has responded.
Speaking earlier today while addressing supporters in Mombasa County, Raila said that he supports anybody who aspires to vies for the top seat in 2022 under the party umbrella.
Odinga added that it is everybody’s democratic right to vie for positions in ODM as every year positions remain vacant and ODM being a democratic party allows everyone to contest them.
“After every year we have elections and the seats remain vacant. ODM is a national party and people have the liberty to vie for positions,” he said.
While encouraging and supporting others for the same, the ODM leader continued that it is the Kenyans who will decide who flies the party’s flag.
“Joho is the deputy party leader, they have the right to vie for any seat and every Kenyan has the same right. It is the ODM party that will decide who will fly the flag. I support Joho’s quest for the presidency.”
The Mombasa governor had delivered his nomination papers to the party officials and expects full support from other party big names.
The Coastal Sultan expressed full confidence in clinching the top seat while dispelling the naysayers that he will stop at nothing.
“I have heard of people questioning my capabilities. If they cannot win the top seat, then that is their problem. As for me, I will not stop at anything else apart from the presidency,” Joho said.
The former Premier also warned against the region’s Kingpin forming their own political outfit, terming it a threat to the National security.
Odinga advised on strengthening the regional economic blocs that will result in the benefit to the whole region rather than the ethnic political parties.
This is after Kilifi governor Amason Kingi and other ODM leaders in the region came out saying that the time was ripe for the formation of the region’s political party, with the date set for this month.
