Raila and Ruto Hanging In The Balance As Mt Kenya Votes Keeps Splitting Among Presidential Candidates

Things could turn sour for both ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto if the Mt Kenya community has a change of heart regarding next year’s presidential contest, it now emerges.

The region is currently appearing torn between the two of them, the reason being that it doesn’t have any formidable presidential candidate for next year, something The Standard has established isn’t true.

The paper, in a special report, indicates that the region has quite a number of serious candidates who can go for it, among them National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.

It warns that things could be very tough for both candidates if the region decided to work with one of its own, judging by data the paper has secretly acquired from the polling circles, apparently IEBC insiders.

It has established that things could get even harder if the calls by area leaders to push unregistered voters to get registered and hit the 10 million voter mark succeeds as this way, the region will hold almost half what a presidential candidate needs to win.

“Reliable sources within polling circles indicate that for now both Ruto and Raila would have it hard, if the Mountain rallied solidly around one of its own locals. The acuteness of their predicament is somewhat blunted by the thought that with running mates from the region, their fortunes should not be so bad,” the paper reports.

But the paper has also found out that judging by the mistreatment Ruto has underwent under President Uhuru Kenyatta, the region could develop cold feet towards settling for the running mate seat.

This, it adds, could also be informed by the fact that Mt Kenyans are used to being in power and can end up coming out in large numbers on the voting day just to ensure that it’s son or daughter rules again.

“And nothing stops a turnout of 99.9 per cent in the Mountain.  IEBC’s projections are placing the expected 2022 voters register at between 21 million and 22. A region that registers 10 million is virtually ready to elect the president of Kenya on its own,” it adds
