Police raid DP Ruto’s UDA meeting in Mombasa County

Police on Thursday, June 3, 2021 disrupted Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party meeting in Mombasa County.

The meeting which was organized by the UDA party Chairman Johnstone Muthama and attended by Senior party officials including; its Secretary General, Veronica Maina in Mombasa city ended pre-maturely after the police stormed the venue.

Reports have revealed that the Party officials had gathered at the Terrace Villas Resort in Nyali Constituency to meet with aspirants from Counties from the Coastal region including; Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.

Muthama hurriedly left the venue of the meeting soon after the police arrived. The police forced the attendees of the meeting out of the premises, forcing the meeting to end abruptly.

The UDA party has been holding meetings with its aspirants over the past few weeks to discuss their ideologies, manifesto and constitution. Previous, they held meetings in Nakuru, Meru and now Mombasa County.

Through a video that was shared on the social media, attendees were seen leaving the premises wearing UDA t-shirts.

“We had taken all necessary precautions. We had masks on, sanitized and maintained social distance,” a supporter stated.

“We will use other platforms such as social media to engage with each other. We will regroup and show the country our unity,” another supporter stated. 

On Monday, May 31, 2021, the police stormed another UDA meeting in Meru County claiming that the meeting was in violation of Covid-19 regulations.

The event was organised by UDA Secretary General Ms. Maina who denied allegations that the meeting had been planned without notifying the police.

“We do not need a police permit for this. It’s not a public rally,” Maina said. 

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i all the public gatherings, processions or movement during the curfew period is not allowed. Through a gazette notice on May 30, 2021, the Interior CS extended the order to 60 more days.
