Peter Kagwanja: Raila Will Net More Votes In Mt Kenya Than William Ruto

ODM leader Raila Odinga has never been closer to winning the presidency than he is now, ahead of next year’s polls, governance strategist Peter Kagwanja has said.

Raila, though yet to officially declare his bid, has since lauched his ‘Azimio La Umoja’ roadmap, which is proof that he indeed will be taking his fifth shot at the seat.

Kagwanja says that the seat is his for the taking, observing that he already has the support he needs in the vote rich Mt Kenya region, which will not only make him president but stabilize his government too.

The Murang’a senatorial aspirant says that Raila is actually bigger in the region than his leading rival, Deputy President William Ruto, hence the big nickname he has there.

In an article in The Star, he gives Raila’s ‘Supreme Leader’ nickname, given to him by natives of Mt Kenya, as proof of this, unlike Ruto who is just an ordinary person there.

“He is more famous than Ruto. There is nobody else who has been called Mutongoria Jamba(supreme leader)—only him and Jomo Kenyatta. The anti-Raila sentiments are because of the relationship he had with former President Mwai Kibaki and the feeling he was anti-Kikuyu,” he says.

For him, what Raila needs to do is to ensure that he unites all the other opposition leaders behind him, now that each seems to be pulling in their own direction.

He observes that this way, Ruto will not be able to get anywhere close to him even if he (Ruto) secures 60% of the Mt Kenya vote.

“Raila has never had a better chance of ascending to the presidency than now. If he manages to unite his former base, it wouldn’t matter what Deputy President William Ruto will do. He will not hack it even if Mt Kenya gave him 60 per cent votes,” he adds.

His observation comes as another blow for the DP, after some leaders from Meru County, which falls under Mt Kenya, on Thursday endorsed Raila presidency.

Led by Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi, they ruled out supporting Ruto, on grounds that his ‘Hustler’ policy glorifies poverty.

Analysts have observed that the DP will need to have the entire mountain support him as a bloc, failure to which he will lose to Raila.

But his allies from the region have maintained that he is the most popular politician in the region currently, even more than President Uhuru Kenyatta, and already has the vote
