ODM makes U-turn in Machakos by-elections surprising Kalonzo

In the latest development on the ongoing preparations for the Machakos County senatorial race Orange Democratic Movement party has changed gears in a last-minute surprise move.

This is after the Raila-led party decided to back Anne Kavindu the divorced wife of former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama as their candidate in the upcoming by-election.

Anne Kavindu was unveiled two weeks ago on January 13, 2021, by the Kalonzo party as the flagbearer to battle out with other candidates in the race to replace Kabaka.

Taking to social media on their official Twitter handle today the party broke the news, adding that the party was doing it in the spirit of the NASA coalition and the BBI, to a member of the committee.

“In the spirit of NASA and BBI, we SHALL rally our support to the Wiper Party candidate Ms. Agnes Kavindu to become the next Senator of Machakos County. Ms. Kavindu was a member of the BBI Steering Committee that came up with the Bill before the Counties,” ODM said on Twitter on Friday.

The seat fell vacant after the death of senator Boniface Kabaka due to stroke complications in December last year.

This comes hours after the ODM party chairman of the Machakos branch Peter Mutuku had settled on the Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate John Katuku, a move that elicited jitters in the ODM camp.

“We have resolved to have a cordial working relationship between the two parties – Maendeleo Chap Chap and ODM that will extend beyond the March 18th by-elections,” he said.

The party through the minority whip Junet Mohamed refuted the claims of their party, and their leader Raila Odinga endorsing John Katuku.
