ODM leader Raila Odinga is currently meeting top Mt Kenya leaders at Karen Blixen in Nairobi, after jetting back into the country from the DRC early this morning. According to a source who confided to this writer, the meeting is about the BBI and 2022 politics. This comes at a time when Peter Kenneth continues to gain prominence in Odinga’s political activities, especially in the Mt Kenya region.
Even though there are reports that Kenneth could either be Odinga’s running-mate or a Prime Minister post-2022, his handlers say the former Gatanga MP’s role in the BBI conversation is to strongly lobby for the interests of the people of Mt Kenya and ensure they are well represented.
Kenneth, who is a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga is among those fronted by some leaders as the possible successor to the president as the next Mount Kenya Region king-pin.
The former Gatanga lawmaker has also endorsed opposition leader Raila Odinga as the best-suited politician to succeed President Uhuru upon his retirement in 2022. During an interview with the Star, the former Gatanga lawmaker described Raila as a man who has been at the center of every struggle to make Kenya better.
“I think Raila has what it takes should he offer himself for the presidency. He has been involved in all the battles to make Kenya better, but I cannot speak for him,” Kenneth said in his Upper Hill office.
Responding to a question over BBI and the 2022 elections, Kenneth said that he does not understand the relationship between BBI and the 2022 election.
“I do not know what the handshake between him and the President entailed when it comes to 2022. Both of them have publicly said it’s not time for politicking.
“Therefore, until it’s quite clear he will be a candidate, it would not be right for us to discuss that candidature,” Kenneth stated. Apart from Kenneth, Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, Senate Majority Leader Irungu Kangata, and his National Assembly counterpart Amos Kimunya are also in attendance, among others.
