Days after meeting Deputy President William Ruto, details have emerged of the ongoing plot by the Kakamega governor and ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya’s plot to decamp to the hustler team.
Reports indicate that the County chief is to lead a contingent of 17 other governors and cabinet secretaries to join the Deputy President’s side.
Speaking to NTV, Mathira legislator Rigathi Gachagua revealed that besides the recent meeting, the Kakamega governor had met the DP twice in his presence, and it was just a matter of time before he crossed over joined by others.
Rigathi further made it clear that the meeting was only about the County chief decamping to the hustler nation, and not an alliance with his party leader Raila Odinga.
“That meeting between Ruto and Oparanya is the fourth meeting in a row. I was present in two previous ones. He approached us in 2019 and 2020 wanting to join the Hustler nation because of the pressure from the people of Kakamega and the leaders there and we have been discussing. Those meetings were held in private as he did not want them publicized. But now he is ready to come to us (join the hustler movement) and this meeting was at his request. He came to negotiate on his own behalf.
“Oparanya is not alone. The other week the DP met 17 governors in private for fear of them being harassed.” Confirmed the Mathira lawmaker.
The ardent DP Ruto supporter added that there were a number of cabinet secretaries and principal secretaries already lining up to join the DP’s camp.
He continued that they were only doing it in confidence for fear of victimization by the government, and would soon do it publicly by December.
Rigathi also stated that they had no business with Raila and wouldn’t have met his Deputy if he came to represent him.
“We do not want the handshake people to push Raila to us (because of our ideological differences and his history of breaking up parties…He (Oparanya) did not come to represent Raila and if he came for Raila we would not have met him because we have no business with Raila.” He added.
