Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has stated that Deputy President William Ruto was banking on the demise of President Uhuru Kenyatta so that he can ascend to the top seat.
Explaining the theory further, Mutahi Ngunyi stated that the second in command was contemplating a situation where he could be the designated survivor if the Head of State ceases to exist, handing him the seat on a silver platter.
To build his case, Ngunyi referenced DP Ruto’s past media briefing where he addressed the media from his Karen home in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic after skipping President Uhuru Kenyatta’s National Covid-19 Conference in September 2020.
“Let’s remember last year when Covid-19 struck, Ruto addressed the nation from a government house in Karen, he was asked by the media, as to why he wasn’t at State House when the President was addressing the nation on covid, Ruto responded by stating that the President and his Deputy cannot travel in the same equipment at any one time.
“What Ruto was saying without uttering the words is that he had contemplated a situation where he was the designated survivor. He was telling the country that should there be a scenario where Uhuru ceases to exist, he is next in line. Ngunyi stated.
He slammed it as a distasteful move that spoke a lot.
“This in my view is distasteful but indicative of where his mind is,” he stated.
The political scientist famed for his tyranny of numbers prediction of an Uhuru Kenyatta victory in 2013 elections compared the situation to that of former Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaoré and his Zaire counterpart Mobutu Sese Seko.
Compaoré rose to power in 1987 after he led a coup d’état on his presumed friend and close associate. President Thomas Sankara.
Mobutu on the other hand, seized power in an elaborate scheme that saw former Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba who appointed him as Secretary of State and commander of the armed forces.
