Mt Kenya Billionaires Lining Up SK Macharia As Raila’s 2022 Running Mate

Royal Media Chairman SK Macharia could be the next Deputy President of Kenya if latest revelations from within ODM leader Raila Odinga and Mt Kenya Foundation’s quarters are anything to go by.

The foundation, whose members have been dubbed Mt Kenya tycoons, has been in the forefront in trying to mould President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession, in the name of protecting the region’s interests.

This it has been reportedly doing by fortifying it’s preffered candidate; Raila, by among others, picking the man to be his deputy, with one of its members, Macharia, being among the five shortlisted persons.

Insider sources told The Star that the media mogul and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth are among the persons shortlisted after weeks of consultations and whose names will be forwarded to Raila.

Others are Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and Peter Munya (Agriculture), as was confirmed by a senior member of the foundation.

“We believe any of them will represent our interests and we are willing to put money behind Raila’s campaign should he pick one of the five,” he said.

Insiders of Raila have said that they could end up picking the running mate proposed by the team, as they come with huge benefits. Mwangi, for instance, will be bringing in at least Sh10 billion for campaigns.

“Naming him as running mate alone will guarantee at least Sh10 billion from Mwangi and his network of friends,” one of the people close to the former Prime Minister told the paper.

He is expected to name his running mate in February next year and is at the same time expected to officially declare his 2022 candidacy this month after a retreat with his inner circle in Naivasha.

The same list, the paper was told, will be shared with the OKA coalition as it prepares to announce its flag bearer, even as it emerges that both the foundation and Uhuru want Raila as next President.
