Details now suggest that Tuesday’s meeting between ODM leader Raila Odinga Raila Odinga and the Mt Kenya tycoons was just an end to the planning and scheming that has been going on for months.
Members of the billionaires club from Central, also known as the Mt Kenya Foundation, hinted at having settled on Raila as their preffered next President, saying that they are doing it for President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has asked them to pick his successor.
One of them now says that this is something that has been ongoing since last year and that their ultimate goal, as directed by the President, is to see to it that the former Premier takes over as the next president.
The individual told The Star that they have been directed to craft a strategy that will make Raila the next Head of State, a plan that is working, revealing that they are at the tail end of delivering to Uhuru.
“This has been a lengthy process involving a lot of consultations. I am happy we are getting to the tail end and the most crucial phase,” he told the Star, at a time when the President’s allies are now freely being seen working with the former Prime Minister.
To finish its job, the team is now expected to hold meetings with opinion leaders and select politicians from Mt Kenya, after which they will get back to the President with a strategy they believe will help Raila.
The paper has established that the group’s planned meeting with members of the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) leaders is also part of the plan to ensure that the team joins Raila to make his chances better.
This is after the President’s realization that it will be a tall order beating his deputy William Ruto with a divided opposition and after personally failing to convince them to back Raila, he has sent the MKF.
ANC Deputy Party Leader Ayub Savula, who has said that his party boss Musalia Mudavadi, one of the OKA chiefs, will not back Raila, says that they will use the Friday meeting to their advantage.
“We are going there to present our agenda. There is nothing like backing Raila. The Mt Kenya caucus wants each and every candidate to present their ideas so they see which idea to buy. They’re focusing on the economy,” the Lugari MP told the paper.
Other members of the OKA top leadership are Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula of Ford Kenya and KANU’s Gideon Moi, whose party has suggested that it would be willing to join Raila.
