The latest utterances by Isiolo governor Mohammed Abdi Kuti are the clearest indication so far of what politicians have in store for Kenyans as the upcoming campaign season promises to be one filled with drama.
Governor Kuti said that immediately he was voted into office in 2017, his detractors didn’t even give him time to settle down in his position but instead, immediately set about mudslinging him through fake news. He disclosed that for four years, he has silently put up with their devious tactics but now time has come for him to show them what he’s made of.
In what seemed like a classic case of fighting fire with fire, governor Kuti who was addressing a crowd said that in the past four years, he has concentrated on his work and largely ignored those trying to soil his name online. He explained that he has let his work fight the falsehoods that have been peddled online.
However, seeming to suddenly adopt a more stern demeanour, the governor said that the time had now come to overturn and reverse all the false narratives that have been planted over the last four years.
Just falling short of unveiling his own Cyber Army, he said that in the remaining one year before the general election, he would make sure the truth comes out and the lies that have been allowed to float around for so long as erased.
In what was perceived as slighting his opponents for being cheap and unsophisticated, the governor mentioned that those people who were maligning his name online were paupers who had been paid only ten shillings.
The governor has been in office since 2017. He previously served as the senator for Isiolo county for one term (2013–2017), a post he was elected to as a member of the United Republican Party. He further represented the Isiolo North Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya for 10 years (2003-2013. He also held the positions of Minister for Youth Affairs in 2005 and Minister for Livestock from 2008 to 2013.
