Although the withdrawal of GSU officers from the DP’s security detail caused a major uproar, in a surprising turn of events, the most sensational and alarmist statement to be issued in his defence hasn’t come from Kapseret member of parliament Oscar Sudi, or Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, or any other his other firebrand lieutenants. Instead, it has been issued by Narc Kenya party leader, Martha Karua.
Karua was speaking this week while appearing on Citizen TV’s Newsnight which was hosted by Waihiga Mwaura.
Responding to the show’s host about the withdrawal of GSU officers from the DP’s residences, and what she thought of the entire issue, the former Justice minister began by acknowledging that the president didn’t break any law because there’s no section in the law which expressly provides a threshold for the DP’s security, and it remains the prerogative of the government, and its security agencies.
She, nevertheless, went ahead to explain that the way and spirit in which the operation was conducted was wrong. She argued that not only should the deputy president have been notified of the impending change of guard, but his acquiescence should have also been sought as well.
Karua sensationally claimed that the way in which the DP’s security was withdrawn and subsequently replaced, was an act of war, and not business like. She maintained, it wasn’t handled with the professionalism of ethical personnel.
In the wide ranging interview, the NARC Kenya leader was also taken to task over her earlier pronouncement that in a contest between Raila Odinga and William Ruto, she would append her signature beside Raila Odinga’s name in a heartbeat without even thinking twice.
She defended herself saying that the circumstances under which she made that statement were very different from the prevailing ones currently. She said that at the time, it was more or less a hypothetical question since none of the two had declared candidacy, unlike now when the country had clear front-runners who have officially declared their interest in the seat, and are in the process of selling their manifestos.
