Martha Karua defends Raila’s forays into Central Kenya

In a move that’s set to further complicate the complex politics of Mount Kenya, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua who recently unveiled a working agreement with former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri of The Service Party and Moses Kuria of Chama Cha Kazi has now come out to vehemently defend former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s recent frequent trips into the Central Kenya region.

The former presidential contender communicated this while replying to Mohammed Wehliye who said on Twitter that Raila Odinga’s constant trips to Mount Kenya were bound to cost him the support that he has been enjoying in pockets of the North Eastern region and other marginalised areas of Kenya that have historically supported him. He argued that the 10 or 20 percent that he’s bound to garner in Central Kenya is much less than the total number of votes that he stands to gain from the marginalised areas. He wrote,

Mohamed Wehliye
Baba risking votes & seats he can easily get from Turkana, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Lamu, Tana River, Marsabit, Kwale, Taita, Samburu etc for hard to get ones in Central Kenya. He shouldn’t forget the marginalised market is far bigger than 10 to 20% of Central Kenya!

In response, Martha Karua wrote, dismissing his worries and declaring that Raila’s trips to Central didn’t necessarily mean he had to forsake his traditional support bases. She argued that he could get support from Central and still maintain his core support areas. She wrote,

@MarthaKarua Must it be either /or cant it be all together as one?

Karua, together with Kiunjuri and Kuria early this month announced a meeting would be held in Limuru in three months to come up with a way forward for the region in the President Uhuru Kenyatta succession race.

In their unity of purpose, the politicians said they were committed to working together on issues affecting Mt Kenya and the nation “irrespective of our political affiliation.”
“We also commit to reaching out to other like-minded leaders to broaden the forum and deepen our unity of purpose,” they said in a statement read by Karua.

Karua’ s latest statement is bound to raise speculation as to whether Raila Odinga is one of the leaders featuring in their radar.
