With the Machakos senatorial by-election just hours away, the Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate for the seat, Mutua Katuku received a huge boost that might play out in his favour when the poll is held on 4th March, 2021.
As things stand now, and with campaigns in final gear, most analysts predict a three horse race, and thus, a three way split of the Machakos votes.
The real contest is expected to play out between the Wiper candidate Agnes Kavindu, who is also Machakos former senator’s ex-wife, Maendeleo Chap Chap’s Mutua Katuku, and the UDA candidate, who has the blessings of William Ruto, Urbanus Muthama Ngengele.
However, the winner of the mini poll may be the one who scoops the cosmopolitan vote. The big three are likely to split the Kamba vote three-way, with the community being the dominant one in the county. With this, the final kick for one of the three who will win the poll will be the non-Kamba vote, and specifically, the Kikuyu vote.
The community has a sizeable majority, especially in urban centers like Athi River and Kangundo, and with the decision by Jubilee party to pull out the race, their vote basket has been orphaned and is up for grabs to the most tactful candidate. With the poll just a couple of days away, Maendeleo Chap Chap’s candidate Mutua Katuku has managed to get a promise from the GEMA community to mobilise their supporters in his favour.
Through the head of the GEMA organisation for Machakos branch Joseph Githemu, they pledged to fully back him come Thursday. Githemu said that no other candidate had shown interest in them, or come to negotiate with them like Katuku had done, and so for that, he would galvernise all their members in support of the Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate. What, however, remains uncertain, is whether the GEMA body will have the ability to sway Kikuyu voters to their preferred candidate.
It is thought that most of the voters from this section might vote with their conscience, with some likely to vote for the UDA candidate due to the Ruto factor.
