Larry Madowo Calls out Cartels in Kibera That glorify Poverty

The outspoken media personality who now works for the BBC is never shy to voice his sentiments on controversial topics. Larry is a Kenyan radio presenter and a reporter who used to work for NTV as a news anchor before flying to greener pastures. Even while in Kenya, Larry used to get bashed for his opinions that many did not seem to agree with, something that never bothered him at all. This time, during a BBC radio interview, Larry put on the spot cartels in Kibera that charge visitors of the area to have a glimpse of how poor people live.
“You can do tours of the slum to come and look at how poor these people are and maybe if you feel so moved, you might give them a pound or two and get a picture for Instagram, why does this still happen in 2019? “
Kibera is one of the biggest slums in Kenya and locals have been known to take domestic and foreign tourists around to marvel at how the area is in deplorable condition. Popular rapper Octopizzo has in the past said that he does act as a tour guide occasionally to foreigners who want to check out the area and gets paid after.
Some sponsors have cropped up as a result, in the past and assisted locals financially after said visits. This is one of the positives of the “tours”, which cannot be shadowed. But some people have used it as a platform to expose the area and people who are vulnerable by showcasing their situation on Instagram just to look philanthropic, which the journalist finds offensive.
