As security officers in Nairobi were Monday evening piecing together details of a plot to bomb the city, one small detail stood out like a sore thumb: the suspect is a relative and close associate of Nairobi Assembly Majority Leader MCA Abdi Guyo.
At the same time, Police are also exploring the possibility that the terrorist attack was targeting Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who frequents Nairobi Safari Club next to Delta Hotel, where the terrorists had been booked.
This comes after it emerged that the key suspect in the foiled terrorist attack Abdimajit Adan, 24 is from the same family and clan as MCA Abdi Guyo in Isiolo County. MCA Guyo, who also hails from Isiolo County, is the patron of the Isiolo Community in Nairobi. Recently, Guyo was elevated to an elder by his clan for caring for Isiolo youth in Nairobi.
Abdimajit Adan was arrested alongside Mohammed Nane on Thursday after a brief exchange of fire in Merti, Isiolo. Police found five AK-47 assault rifles and 36 fully loaded magazines in their car. A third suspect was killed at the scene.
Terrorists staying at Delta Hotel Next to Nairobi Safari Club
In the meantime, the police have cordoned off a room in Delta Hotel where the would-be terrorists booked a room since the Friday of February 9 this year. This is after detail revealed that Adan had been booked into a hotel opposite the Central Police Station in Nairobi ten days earlier.
Police are now carrying out police investigation to confirm if Adan was acting independently or in cohorts with the Senior Jubilee City politician in organizing terrorist activities. Analysts have noted the proximity of Delta Hotel to Nairobi Safari Club which has been in the news as one of the city luxury hotels patronized by Governor Sonko.
Detectives handling the matter are looking into possible political motives of the foiled terrorist attack and particularly whether the intention was to attack Nairobi Safari Club or Governor Sonko. They added that possible political motives cannot be ruled out given the relationship between the key suspect and the senior city politician.
Police to Confirm if Suspect was in Touch with Guyo
Police found Adan’s clothes, an air ticket from Elwak to Wilson in the Delta Hotel room where the terrorism suspect had been staying. They also recovered one Safaricom sim card, and two unused Airtel sim cards in the Delta Hotel room to confirm Adan was in touch with anyone in Nairobi including his distant cousin MCA Abdi Guyo.
Adan and his associates appear to have been well financed because prior to the arrest he had purchased two motorcycles — registration numbers KMEE 180R and KMEE 372R — which were recovered from two other suspects in Garbatula later. Both Guyo and Adan come fro, Garbatula.
Terrorists were possibly targeting Nairobi Safari Club
While it is not yet clear where the suspects were planning to attack, but police officers attached to the ATPU said the improvised explosive devices and grenades recovered from them would have been powerful enough to bring down at least one multi-storeyed building like the Nairobi Safari Club.
If it turns out Adan was working in cohorts with the Nairobi Assembly leader Hon Abdi Guyo, this will not be the first time the MCA is linked to crime in the city. Last year, he was named in an NTV Documentary as the leader and financier of the Kayole-based violent crime gang called Gaza Gang.
This week, police investigations and media reports identified him as the mastermind behind the increased robberies and muggings in the City CBD in January. He could not be reached for comments at the time of going to press.
