Former World youth champion Gilbert Soet Kwemoi has been confirmed dead.
The 23-year-old died on Friday,August 13 at a hospital in Mount Elgon following a short illness.
Iten-based coach Julias Kirwa while confirming the tragic news said the former gold champion collapsed and was confirmed dead on arrival in a health facility in Mount Elgon.
He, however, did not divulge more information about the death but mourned Gilbert as a promising athlete.
“it is true we have lost him at a younger age. He was a promising athlete.” Said Kirwa.
The late athlete was born in Kipsigon in Mount Elgon area, Bungoma County on October 3, 1997 and represented Kenya in the Olympics in China, winning gold in 1500M in 3:41:95 during the 2014 youth Olympics games.
A year later, Kwemoi won for Kenya at the African under 20 championship in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In Condolence message following the sudden death, Former Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka described the athlete as focused and hardworking athlete.
“Gilbert Soet Kwemoi was a humble, talented and outstanding sportsman with a bright future. My deepest sympathies and heartful condolences to his family friends,the people of Mount Elgon and the entire athletes fraternity during this difficult time,” the speaker said.
