Governance Expert and former Uhuru Kenyatta’s advisor Professor Peter Kagwanja has introduced a whole new matrix in the possible combination of reasons as to why Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru may have bolted out of Jubilee. Kagwanja who disclosed some of the political deal-making and negotiations that have been going on behind the scenes between Jubilee and Raila’s camp gave two likely reasons behind the governor’s move.
Kagwanja was speaking while appearing on Citizen TV’s Newsnight which was hosted by Waihiga Mwaura. Alongside Kagwanja on the show were political analyst Herman Manyora, and Communications Expert, Barack Muluka.
The professor, who is also an author, explained that one reason Anne Waiguru may have resolved to move to the United Democratic Alliance party which is associated with the Deputy President, may have to do with her political survival. He reckons that the governor figured the going was getting tough in Jubilee and so she moved on to somewhere she felt it would be easier to secure a direct nomination.
The other reason Kagwanja gave was that perhaps it had all to do with her personal ambition as a politician. He disclosed that earlier on during talks that have been ongoing between them and the camp allied to the former Prime Minister, at some point they had their minds settled on Waiguru as Raila’s running mate. Kagwanja didn’t elaborate further on when exactly this changed, and what occasioned their change of heart. What he simply said is that somewhere down the road, their earlier decision to settle on Waiguru moved.
He recalled back when the governor had made overtures to the DP during the early days of Jubilee’s second term, asserting that this step by Waiguru shouldn’t be taken to be bigger or unexpected than it really is in reality.
It is worth noting that in the past when Waiguru and the DP have floated around the idea of forming a working relationship going into the 2022 polls, the governor has always been touted as a likely running mate to the Deputy President.
