As president Uhuru Kenyatta completed his two-day working visit of the US during which he chaired a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) high-level open debate on diversity, state building and peace, his eagerly awaited return is expected to shed more light on the whole Pandora Papers scandal. Moreover, it might also help solve the puzzle which hasn’t escaped many Kenyans’ attention; the president’s veiled threat hours after the Pandora Papers were released and the DP’s, (and his lieutenants) unbelievable hushed silence on the topic. It was a puzzling statement by the president that left everyone wondering what it had to do with the Pandora exposé.
Just hours after the Pandora Papers, which exposed secret foreign bank accounts by the president’s family, president Uhuru released a statement which sounded quite curious. Instead of perhaps defending himself, or downplaying the entire issue as everyone had expected, instead, he issued a statement that had a threatening tone. The president said,
“That these reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe. The movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime and corruption thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness,”
“The Pandora Papers and subsequent follow-up audits will lift that veil of secrecy and darkness for those who cannot explain their assets or wealth,” President Kenyatta added.
Perhaps aware that his puzzling statement was bound to lead to more questions than answers, the president promised to make everything clear once he lands from the USA.
”My attention has been drawn to comments surrounding the Pandora Papers. Whilst I will respond comprehensively on my return from my State Visit to America.”
It had been expected that the DP and his camp would jump on the exposé with glee, relishing the opportunity to bash the president. While no one expected the DP himself to personally attack the president, the usual drill where his allies insult Uhuru while he watches, was expected.
Surprisingly, this hasn’t even come close to happening.
