JSC Commissioner reveals the secret ranking for the position of Chief Justice days after the interview

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Commissioner Macharia Njeru has revealed details of the rankings for Chief Justice Candidates that have remained secret since the nomination of Martha Koome for the position of Chief Justice of Kenya.

On Wednesday, May 5, 2021, Macharia disclosed that Justice Edward Ouko was a top contender for the position of Chief Justice in the rankings that have been marred with allegations of rigging and secrecy.

Speaking during Ouko’s interview for the Supreme Court Judge, Njeru praised him for his humility adding that he was one of the front runners for the position of the Chief Justice.

“I’m impressed by your humility and of course you were one of the leading candidates for the CJ position and you have taken it in stride and a lot of humility,” Njeru stated.

“What makes you a humble person who is able to take results of a situation in stride and move on because it is something that lacks in many of us,” Njeru posed.

However, the JSC Commissioners had remained silent on how they ranked the 10 CJ candidates days after nominating Martha Koome for the position of Chief Justice.

This is after United States based Kenyan lawyer Makau Mutua had sued the Commissioners to reveal its ranking criteria and marks scored by each candidate.

Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia who is also a former candidate for the CJ position had also claimed that he was rigged out at the last minute of the interview process.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) criticised Njeru for reportedly giving Ngatia 42 per cent in the interviews.

Justice David Marete and Nduma Nderi who had presented themselves for the position of CJ have already been interviewed for the position of Supreme Court Judge.
