They say those who love you tell you the truth though it may hurt. Perhaps because SK Macharia has already openly declared his support for Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga, he doesn’t fear exposing how Raila’s lieutenants may have already begun failing him quite early. While covering the voter registration exercise that entered Day 2 yesterday, Mombasa County was put side by side with Juja, and the difference between the two in terms of mobilisation skills couldn’t have been more different. Although Joho talks a good game and is always heavy on showmanship and hyping up crowds, registration centers at the coast were a sad sight.
Citizen TV caught up with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials at the coast, and most of them couldn’t help stifling a yawn or catching a nap, as there was literally no work to be done. Very few people were turning up to register for votes despite the fact that IEBC projected potential new voters in the region to be north of 6 figures.
The most notorious of all was a registration center at Star of the Sea school. Literally no one went to register as a new voter. Not even a single person. Officials of the electoral body who were interviewed by Citizen TV said that they waited the whole day for people to come but not a single person turned up. This forced them to turn there approach into an outreach program. They began knocking on doors looking for prospective new voters, but even then, they still couldn’t find any.
In contrast, Juja, which earlier this year was taken by UDA-allied George Koimburi during a by-election after the death of Waititu, registered impressive numbers, with many turning up to register. While it had been expected that it would only be the youth that would turn up for the exercise being new voters, Juja exceeded expectations. IEBC officials disclosed that older people turned up too, and there actually was a 70 year old who turned up to be registered.
