Governor Hassan Joho fast dwindling 2022 presidential ambition suffered another fatal blow after losing control of the Mombasa County Assembly.
This happened after a majority of Mombasa members of county assembly on Tuesday afternoon won a vote to impeach the Transport and Infrastructure Executive Taufiq Balala despite intensive lobbying of Governor Joho against the vice.
The impeachment motion that was moved by Jomvu Kuu MCA Athman Shebe and seconded by Bofu MCA Ahmed Salama accused Mr Balala of gross misconduct and incompetence after failing to account for more than Sh3 billion allocated to his docket for development projects in the past three years. The MCAs vowed to also serve the same dose of medicine to the county speaker and even Governor Joho if push comes to shove.
Out of the 42 MCAs of Mombasa county, only one MCA Lucy Chizi of Mtopanga stood to defend Governor Joho’s ally Mr Balala and opposed the motion before the assembly.
In an attempt to save his allies from being impeached, Joho attempted in vain to sponsor an Operation Fagia Bunge aimed at getting rid of the ‘rogue” MCAs that refused to obey him.
