Maurice Ogeta, the bodyguard of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, has been released from custody, according to Philip Etale, the ODM communications director.

In a tweet on Saturday, Etale stated that Ogeta was released a few minutes before 1 am and was driven while blindfolded before being left in the middle of the road in Ruai towards Kangundo.

During his detention, Ogeta’s car was reportedly vandalized. Despite the ordeal, he is relieved to be alive.

The release came after the High Court issued a directive on Friday, ordering the police to produce Ogeta before any court in the country.

This ruling came following a suit filed by Ogeta’s brother, Christopher Onyango Ogettah, which was certified as urgent on Thursday.

The incident leading to Ogeta’s detention occurred on Wednesday morning when he was accosted by unknown assailants suspected to be police officers while on his way to work from home. He was flagged down and forced into the boot of his car.

Raila Odinga and Ogeta’s family members had demanded his immediate release, adding pressure to resolve the situation. Ogeta is among several individuals and leaders allied to Raila Odinga who were arrested in connection with the recent three-day anti-government protests, which concluded on Friday.
