Despite his close association with the Orange Democratic movement leader Raila Odinga, Machakos County governor Alfred Mutua has maintained that he is still in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta as the next Kenyan President.
Speaking earlier Today Thursday August 26, 2021, with Citizen Television governor Mutua maintained that his working with the former prime minister will be depending on the political side he will be then.
He added that there is need for fresh and young blood to work together with the veterans to enable continuity in the game ahead of the 2022 race, because the button has to be handed over at some point.
“What this country needs is a good leader; I am still running for president. On working together, we have to figure out in what coalition does Raila fall and where do I fall because this county needs to have new leaders; fresh faces out there.
“We need to be cognizant of the fact that we need a combination of older citizens and leaders with younger vibrant leaders who will take us forward because the button has to be handed over,” he said.
The governor has for the past few months been accompanying the AU special envoy on a number of political and non political events across the Country.
Just recently last month, Governor Mutua accompanied the ODM leader to Murang’a for an event in celebration of Skiza Tunes payment increase.
After the successful event, the county boss was later tagged along when the ODM Leader went to Tigoni for an event with a section of leaders from the region, in what appeared as a build up for the 2022 duel.
And just the other weekend, the Machakos County boss met former prime minister at their Nairobi Karen home for a breakfast, before later being joined by Mr. Odinga for their joint birthday party with the Tanzanian Bongo star Rayvanny.
Their frequent meetings and renewed bromance has since raised speculations that governor Mutua could be crafting a coalition with Odinga ahead of 2022, even though, the former Premier is yet to make an official announcement on whether he will be contesting in 2022 against DP Ruto and other candidates.
