Gideon Moi weekend rally marred by violence.

For some time now, KANU chairman Gideon Moi, whose style of politics had previously been free of commotion, has repeatedly found himself in the middle of chaotic scenes as he seeks to curve a niche for himself in the stormy political world of Rift Valley. However, in an interesting development yesterday, Gideon found himself in a melee that he had nothing to do with. The violence which took place hundreds of Kilometers from his home base pitted two bitter rivals against each other, and thrust the Baringo senator in the eye of a storm.
The Sunday rally was a BBI popularisation tour which saw Gideon escorted by senior KANU officials, including Nick Salat and the Fafi MP Abdikarim Osman Mohamed.. The event was also attended by the Garissa governor Ali Korane who has, in the past, expressed his support for the BBI.
Speaker after speaker, they all expressed their support for the BBI, outlining its benefits, and promising to ensure that it passed. When Gideon Moi spoke, he told the gathered crowd that some of the proposals contained in the BBI such as the ward fund that will be remitted to wards through their MCAs and the increased county allocations to 35%, from the current 15%, was going to help the country in general, and marginalised counties like Garissa in particular.
However, during the rally, unrest erupted between the supporters of the current governor Ali Korane, and those of his bitter rival, Nathif Jama Adam.
Nathif, who also attended the rally to offer his support for the BBI was the previous governor, serving as the first governor of the county on a Wiper Democratic Party ticket. He was however unseated by Korane after a hotly contested election in 2017.
Nevertheless, Korane’s tenure has been marred by endless controversies, from accusations of murder to those of graft, and Nathif has capitalised on this to campaign against him.
Following the skirmishes between the supporters of the two which lasted for a while, calm was restored, as each side walked away cheering its favourite politician.
