Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 was released on Ksh.1 million bail after he was accused of fueling violence during the Matungu by-elections.
The former Sports Cabinet Secretary was arrested on Friday March 5, 2021 and spent his weekend in custody. He was arraigned in Kiambu court on Monday March 8, 2021 but was again detained for one more night in police custody.
During his bail ruling, the court announced that his case would be heard again on April 9, 2021.
Echesa, who was briefly declared a chronic criminal armed with the National Police Service, presented himself before the Matungu Police Station at 4pm on Friday.
The move came just hours after Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai ordered Echesa to surrender to the nearest police station by 7 pm on Friday, March 5, 2021.
The police boss disclosed that the politician was on the run and he would be treated as an armed and dangerous criminal should he fail to turn himself up to the authorities.
“The IG has further directed Rashid Echesa who is on the run after assaulting an election official to surrender to the nearest police station by 1 pm this afternoon otherwise he will be treated as an armed and dangerous criminal,” police spokesperson Charles Owino stated.
Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati ordered Echesa’s arrest a few hours after the incident.
