FKF Premier League welcomes two tycoons as their teams promoted from Super League

The monetisation and commercialisation of Kenyan football began a while back with the entry of Elly Kalekwa and his SOFAPAKA club, followed by millionaire businessman Cleophas Shimanyula and his well-oiled Kakamega Homeboyz FC. It was taken a notch higher with the Shahs and their Bidco FC, alongside Ricardo Badoer with his well funded Wazito FC. And now, barely a year since William Ruto became the Chairman of Bandari FC, two clubs associated with super-rich individuals have been promoted from the National Super League, NSL, and are currently in the FKF Premier League.

Vihiga Bullets, owned by former Vihiga governor Akaranga, is one of the clubs that has managed to get through to the FKF Premier League, after finishing second in the National Super League.

Top in the league was Talanta FC which is owned by Communications Authority of Kenya. However, worth noting is that the Chairperson of the club is one, Wanjiru Mahihu. That is a name that is associated with one of the richest and most influential families in the country.

Former powerful Coast Province Provincial Commissioner, Eliud Mahihu famously had a daughter, Wanjiru Mahihu.

These two teams are expected to take spending to a higher level in the already competitive big money world of FKF.

Talanta FC had quite a difficult time pushing through the season, and had to contend with the detrimental effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which ravaged the country and led to the suspension of all sports activities.

The Communication Authority of Kenya- led side tested their mettle to compete in the top tier with a friendly encounter against the then newly crowned FKF-PL champions Tusker at GEMS Cambridge on the week following their promotion.

At the time they clinched the title, they managed to amass 68 points, eight clear of their closest opponents Fortune Sacco who had to wait for their remaining matches to know if they would claim the remaining promotion slot over Kenya Police who were hot on their heels. Fortune and Police were separated from each other by a solitary point. At the time, the two appeared likely to be contenders for position two.
