Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Lagdera member of parliament Farah Maalim reaffirmed his commitment to support the candidate that will be settled upon by the One Kenya Alliance with a stinging statement against Right Honourable Raila Odinga, just hours after the group’s Naivasha retreat.
Farah Maalim, who has been a long-term Raila Odinga ally laid bare the reason as to why there is general fatigue among many people and specifically him in supporting Raila Odinga.
Recapping his lengthy political career, he began by explaining how he first got into politics in 1992 by supporting Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. From that point henceforth, he explained how he has been supporting Raila in each election upto the most recent one in 2017. Concluding, he said that he has now grown fatigued, and would be supporting someone else in the forthcoming polls.
One of the sticking points in the One Kenya Alliance negotiations has been whether or not to even include Raila in the outfit, with Baringo senator Gideon Moi reportedly differing with his partners who do not want the ODM leader anywhere near OKA.
Farah was speaking on K24’s weekly political show Punchline which was hosted by Debarl Ainea. Alongside Farah Maalim in the studio was Kisumu East member of parliament Shakeel Shabir, Kandara member of parliament Alice Wahome and lawyer, Collins Odote.
Maalim was elected as the National Assembly Deputy Speaker in the 10th Parliament after the 2007 fiercely contested election that brought to power the coalition government.
He joined active politics in 1992 and got elected as Lagdera MP, a position he served until 2013 when he declared an interest in the Senate seat but lost.
He has in the past served as ODM Party- Disciplinary committee chairperson
Before quitting the Orange Democratic Party in 2017, Maalim was the party’s disciplinary committee chairperson.
In the run up to the 2017 general election, Maalim shocked many when he ditched Raila’s party to join Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party.
Maalim is now among Kalonzo’s closest allies and is expected to advise the Wiper leader as he seeks to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
