Wiper party candidate Agnes Kavindu and former Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama’s ex-wife is the next Machakos County senator following her win in the by-election that was held yesterday March 18, 2021.
Kavindu trounced Urbanus Ngengele the United Democratic Alliance candidate, a party linked to Deputy President William Ruto.
As of the time of this publication, tallied results shown by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission revealed that Kavindu was leading with 16,738 votes, while UDA’s Urbanus Ngengele was second with 3,266 votes.
The landslide results were a projection of the 190 polling stations that had already been tallied out of the total 213 polling stations.
She is expected to be declared the winner of the by-elections following her unassailable lead.
Kitheka Simeon Kioko was the third with 655 votes. Other names also on the ballot included; Katuku John Mutua, Musingi John Kioko, Mwanza Lily Nduku, Nthenge Otho Edward Musembi, Munyambu Francis Musembi, Mweu Jonathan Makenzi, Nthama Sebastian Nzau, and Muindi Stanley Masai.
The mini poll attracted a low voter turn-out with, 19.48 percent of the registered voters only turning up for the exercise.
A total of 21,431 votes were cast in the by-election from the possible 110,073 registered voters in the county.
So far only 16 votes have been rejected.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former senator Boniface Kabaka on December 11, last year.
