The global Covid-19 pandemic prompted many companies to transition from physical work stations in an office to partial or full-time remote working for its employees. For some, working from home has been a lifestyle choice prior to the pandemic, given their line of business where transactions with clients are done online. No matter the circumstance that led you to work from home, it can be a rewarding experience and achieve the same results just as working from an office. Here are a few tips to guide you as you work from home.
1. Have a designated work station
Begin by identifying a suitable location in your home as the workspace. For example, you could use the dining table and a chair as your workstation. Declutter your workspace and ensure that you have only the necessary tools for your work on the table. This will well help you have a clear mind as you work. Some basic items you need as you work from home include your desktop computer or laptop, a notebook, a pen, desktop calendar, internet connection, and your cell phone.
Find out if your office has signed up for remote working systems such as Microsoft Teams and Startup Suite App by Brainverse Technologies and sign up. These systems are developed to enable companies to efficiently carry out all their tasks online, such as scheduling meetings, holding meetings or group calls, sharing documents, and managing tasks.

- Staff management (sign in and sign out, task management, efficient team collaboration, leaves and off management),

2. Prepare a to-do list
Given that you are working from home, it is easy to be distracted by different things in your house that are calling for your attention such as: cleaning a pile of dirty dishes, washing laundry, attending to unexpected visits from a neighbor or guests, spending unnecessary time on social media or taking care of your pet.
To counter this, list the things that you hope to achieve on that day, and tick them off as you complete each task. Doing this will give you a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. Having a structure will help you focus on the task at hand. Moreover, this will help you quickly prioritize tasks that are more urgent than the others and complete them in good time.
3. Take regular breaks
It is highly recommended to have regular health breaks when working on a computer for an extended period of time. While there is no set standard for this, it is recommended that as “a minimum guideline at least 5 minutes in every hour should be spent away from the screen.” Further, “it’s also important to make sure you change posture regularly, refocus eyes; and do some simple stretching exercises at your desk.”
4. Observe work-life balance
If you are working for a company, what are the official working hours? For example, if your designated working hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a lunch break from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, adopt the same structure as you work from home. Once you are done for the day, shut down your computer and find other ways of re-energizing yourself.
You could go for a walk, meet up with a friend, do some gardening, or find a relaxing activity that you enjoy which will help you unplug from the day’s work. Doing this will help you make the mental switch from work, so as to intentionally pay attention to other areas of your life such as rest, socializing, doing house chores, or going out to a restaurant for a change of scenery, to break the monotony of being in the house.
Research has shown that adopting a regular exercise routine can have several health benefits. One of the top benefits of exercise is that it can significantly impact how you feel. According to research, “exercise can increase the production of endorphins, which are known to help produce positive feelings and reduce the perception of pain.” Therefore, scheduling a workout either before you start your day or at the end of your work schedule will go a long way in helping you feel more relaxed and happier with yourself. To begin with, you can look up home exercises that you can carry out for about 30 minutes.
We hope you have a rewarding work from home experience. If you have a question or want to share more ideas on how to make the most from your work from home experience, please leave your comment below. We are happy to hear from you.
