Elachi; Ruto denied me Jubilee funding in 2017 dagoretti race, saying a Kikuyu can’t beat Arati

Even as unconfirmed reports continue to claim that Dagoretti North member of parliament Simba Arati will be vying for the Kisii gubernatorial seat and so will not defend his current parliamentary seat, former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi continues to fight off what she terms as rumours that she’s a Kikuyu. In her latest statement on the topic, she narrated how the unfounded belief that she’s a Kikuyu led to Deputy President William Ruto and her engaging in a heated exchange. She disclosed that Ruto was against her candidature in Dagoretti because he didn’t believe she could beat Simba Arati.

Elachi was speaking during an appearance on Citizen TV’s morning show Daybreak which was hosted by Sam Gituku. Others on the show were Makueni legislator Dan Maanzo, the Orange Democratic Movement party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Ford Kenya’s Kitutu Chache member of parliament, Richard Onyonka.

Elachi revealed that months to the general election, the Deputy President expressed his apprehension with her candidature in the Dagoretti North seat race, arguing that it would be a tall feat for a Kikuyu candidate to merely win a seat in such a constituency, let alone beat a candidate in the shape and form of Simba Arati.

Elachi revealed that she took offence at this, letting him know that she stood a good chance of winning the race, and also, that she wasn’t a Kikuyu, but as a matter of fact, a Luhya.

Saying that the DP remained adamant, Elachi narrated how she nevertheless pushed on with the journey to the ballot, fighting it out with the man who was the favourite of the party’s leadership. In the nomination polls, his opponent could only manage a paltry 1000 votes while she received more than 36000.

Ever since she burst on the political scene after the 2013 general elections as a Nominated Senator for the Jubilee party, Beatrice Elachi’s real ancestral origin has continued to be an issue of great contention. While some argue that she is a Kikuyu, others believe she’s a Luhya.
