Drama as Sonko’s lawyers force prosecution to give ex-governor breakfast for case to proceed

The video of Sonko enjoying a hearty morning meal while behind the docks when he was presented before Kiambu Law Courts yesterday has become the highlight of his duration in court. Sonko is known to cause theatrics wherever he goes, and as a matter of fact, it is widely considered one of the major reasons that he was forced out of office besides the mismanagement accusations. However, yesterday, it was surprising that the absurd demands that were forwarded in court didn’t occur from Sonko, but from learned friends, Danstan Omari and John Khaminwa; two distinguished and respected lawyers.
While it is pretty likely that the legal team was operating on orders from their client, still, it was quite a spectacle to see Sonko calm in the entire ordeal.
Sonko had been detained the previous day at DCI Headquarters, and spent the night locked up in Muthaiga Police Station. What is curious is that he had been summoned to present himself to DCI Headquarters in connection with claims he made about him and Interior PS Karanja Kibicho conspiring to commit hooliganism, a summon that he agreed to honour. However, when he was dragged into court yesterday, he faced charges of a different nature.
According to the charge sheet, the ex-governor committed an offence of invasion of private property and assault in Buruburu, Nairobi in 2019.
“On May 25, 2019, at Buruburu Phase 4 in Kamukunji Sub County within Nairobi County with others not before the court, the accused unlawfully led a group of men and assaulted Joel Kinja Muthui thereby occasioning him actual bodily harm,” the charge sheet read.
Once in court, Sonko’s legal team maintained that their client had undergone mistreatment and torture after being grilled for six straight hours, then being forced to sleep behind bars and dragged to court to face previously undisclosed charges. They demanded that Sonko be given breakfast before he could be in a position to proceed with the hearings.
Although the DPP and DCI gave in to their demands, the court later denied Sonko bail and ordered that he be held until Thursday when it would make a decision. He remains detained at Gigiri Police Station.
