Drama was witnessed at the Siaya County offices after angry County residents stormed the Governor’s office protesting alleged cases of financial misappropriation of the County finances by the County government.
The angry protestors majorly composing of the youths riding Boda Boda in the region demanded the intervention of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to arrest and prosecute senior County officials implicated in corruption.
The protestors were singing and shouting anti-county government slogans, while carrying placards displaying messages of displeasure on how the county government of Siaya was incompetent and corruptly running its affairs.
Things took a drastic turn with the governor’s security detail responding swiftly to avert the situation and deter the protesters from entering into his county office and forcefully remove him from office.
Reports indicate that the security officers roughed up the protestors with further reports indicating that some of them sustained minor injuries.
They however vowed never to relent in their quest for justice until the County administration shows proper and transparent accountability in its financial management for the benefit of all.
They accused the oversighting authorities of not doing their work, and blamed the National government and anti-corruption agencies for turning a blind eye even as millions of tax payers money was being miss appropriated.
The protestors also called for a lifestyle audit to the County chief, his family, and senior county government officials in order to ascertain their sources of wealth and monies.
While addressing the media outside the County officers the protestors through their head noted that they will not be silenced in the process until their pursuit for accountability by the County officials succeeds.
“As we are speaking, millions of shillings meant for the bursary is gone and there is no medicine in our hospitals,” the group leader, only identified as Ojiro, stated.
Siaya County has been on the spot over corruption allegations, with a member of the assembly going on record confessing to having received bribes from the county executive to vote in favour of the County’s Appropriation Bill for the 2020/2021 Financial Year.
Speaking to a vercular Radio station (Ramogi) on Wednesday, August 25, the West Asembo MCA, Ambrose Akuno, confessed to having received a sum of Ksh150,000 bribe from the executive.
Akuno noted that the bribe, received was from the office of the Governor and was to motivate him to vote against an inquiry into an alleged Ksh600 million misappropriation in the county coffers
