Police have arrested a Turkish businessman alleged to have been part of Deputy President William Ruto’s team who were on a trip to Uganda.
Reports revealed that the businessman was reportedly arrested on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at the Wilson Airport while re-entering the country from Uganda and is being detained by police officers for questioning.
In his statement, the Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi alleged that he was aboard the same police vehicle with the businessman.
“They alleged they want to interrogate him but they are trying to provoke the Deputy President because he remained silent when they blocked him from traveling,” Sudi stated.
The businessman was alleged to be among five people who were scheduled to accompany the Deputy President to Uganda on Tuesday, August 7, 2021.
During an interview on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, Ruto dismissed claims that the man had questionable character, adding that he was a respected businessman.
“Those claiming that this man is a terrorist are not only soiling his name but that of Kenya as a Country,” DP stated.
The Turkish Embassy in Nairobi defended the businessman saying that he was an investor who had been in Kenya on several occasions.
The embassy further stated that the businessman was a law abiding citizen who was legally in Kenya having traveled using his Turkish passport.
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen had predicted that the Government would arrest the Turkish businessman.
“The state has been sponsoring stories of Turkish businessman in the newspaper, I have no doubt that if he comes to Kenya he will be arrested even if it’s for few hours just to get to link DP Ruto with crime or something for political interest,” Murkomen stated.
